Homework
Homework in Reception is Phonics and reading. Each week we will upload a PDF with the sounds and Tricky Words learnt that week. There will also be a copy stuck in your child's homework book. Please look through these with your child and support them to say the sound alongside the action (left hand picture) and then have a go at writing the sounds using the rhyme (right hand picture). Videos of how to pronounce the sounds correctly can be found on the Phonics session of our Reception page.
Each week you will receive a reading book to share with your child. This will be matched to the sounds we have taught in class, so nothing in there should be new learning. We recommend a 'little and often' approach to reading to keep your child engaged and help them to build their confidence. You do not need to read the whole book each night, but could just do 1 or 2 pages at a time. Comprehension is a big part of learning to read, so some simple questions about the pictures and story would be a helpful activity to do instead of reading the words. Each book lists the sounds and tricky words to expect on the back of the front cover, a recap of these would be another suitable activity. When reading the story, encourage your child to say the sounds and blend them together to read the words. This skill is difficult and takes time so requires lots of practise and repetition. Every time you read with your child, please record it in their reading diary.
