Week Beginning 13.10.25

This week in Year 5, our curious scientists and historians have been hard at work!

In Science, Year 5 have been investigating friction – the force that slows things down when they rub against each other. To explore this, the children carried out a fun and slightly slippery experiment using jelly cubes! With chopsticks, they tested how easy (or tricky!) it was to pick up jelly cubes coated in salt compared to those covered in oil. The class discovered that the salt created more friction, making it easier to grip the jelly, while the oil made the cubes slippery, reducing friction.

In History, this week’s focus was on understanding the decline of the Maya and what caused such an advanced society to fade away? Year 5 explored different theories, including drought, war, over-farming, and the abandonment of cities, and discussed how historians use evidence to piece together stories from the past.

It’s been a fantastic week of hands-on learning, critical thinking, and curiosity in Year 5.
