Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 03.11.25
This week, we jumped straight into our brand-new topic — Magical Muggles — inspired by the world of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling.
Our classrooms are already starting to feel a little bit magical as Year 5 explored how J.K. Rowling helps readers picture each character so vividly. The children will be using these techniques in their own character descriptions in English over the coming weeks.
In art, creativity really took flight! Everyone followed a step-by-step drawing technique to create their very own Hedwig, Harry’s snowy owl. The results were fantastic, with each one showing a unique twist of personality and imagination.
Next, we started a new subject this term – Geography. Year 5 have been studying the map of the United Kingdom, learning about the four different countries that make it up – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – as well as their capital cities. We even discussed why these cities are located where they are, thinking about rivers, trade and history.
In DT, Year 5 began investigating different materials as we prepare to design and make our own magical banners. The children explored fabrics such as cotton, denim, corduroy, satin, chiffon and felt — feeling their textures, testing their strength, and deciding which might be best for their creations.
Finally, in PE, Year 5 began an exciting new Dance unit, all with a Harry Potter theme! The children worked collaboratively to create short routines inspired by the moment Harry tries to receive his letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There was fantastic teamwork, creativity and a sprinkle of Hogwarts magic in every performance!
