Role Play / Dialogue
During this week, we have been doing some role play and acting. We acted out a scene from the book we are reading, Letters from the Lighthouse. We had to take on the roles of the main character, Olive, and her mum when her mum visits her in hospital. We acted out the moment when Olive’s mum ran down the hallway to see her daughter and showed lots of different emotions during their conversation.
Later that same day, we wrote the scene in our books using our own words and included dialogue. We focused on filling the writing with emotion and description. We also underlined different parts of the dialogue in different colours, such as red, blue, green and orange, to help us understand and improve our writing later on.

Lighthouse Roleplay
This week, we have been doing drama to predict what we think will happen next in Letters from the Lighthouse. We worked in groups of two or three, but most groups were pairs, and we got into character as either Olive or her mum.
The scene focused on the moment when Olive is in hospital and her mum comes in, but we had to imagine what might happen next in the story. In our version, the doctor says that Olive’s mum is dead, even though she is actually alive, which we think will cause a lot of confusion and emotion between them.
After the role play, we wrote the dialogue in our learning theme books, using speech marks and adding extra detail to show the characters’ emotions in the hospital wing.

Poems
This week in Year 6, we have been writing poems in groups of two or three about World War II. We all created a draft and then designed our poems on paper after reading “That Night of Death” by J. J. Rattigan, which was written during the war in November 1940.
The poem helped us imagine what life was like during the Blitz and also helped us improve our vocabulary. We thought carefully about using rhyming couplets as well as ambitious and effective word choices. We really enjoyed being poets and performing our poetry for the class!

Maths
In maths, we continued learning about angles. We learned that an acute angle is less than 90 degrees, a right angle is always 90 degrees, an obtuse angle is more than 90 degrees but less than 180 degrees, and a reflex angle is more than 180 degrees but less than 360 degrees. We also learned that vertically opposite angles are always equal.
We learned this step by step, which made it easier to understand. If you remember these rules, angles are not too difficult!

Tennis
In tennis, we worked in pairs and hit the ball back and forth, trying to keep the rally going for as many shots in a row as possible within the time limit. After that, we joined two pairs together to form a group of four. We also practised fish and chips, where we tried to collect as many points as we could in the time given.
Bleep Test
In the bleep test, we had to run back and forth while trying to keep up with the beeps. Each time, the beeps got faster, which made it more challenging and used a lot of stamina. It was tough but a good way to test our fitness.

History – World War II
In history, we continued learning about World War II. We explored the key events of the war and learned more about what happened and when. First, we used clue cards to help us work out the correct order of events. Then, we researched further to identify which events we thought were the most important.
It was interesting to see how the war developed over time and to discuss why some events had a bigger impact than others.
