Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 19.01.26
It’s been a week that’s truly reached for the stars.
Firstly, we launched the week by immersing ourselves in retrofuturism, where the children were challenged to imagine what the world might look like in 50, 100, 500 or even 1,000 years. From elevators to the Moon to flying cars zooming through the skies, the ideas were truly astronomical. Even better, the children were able to clearly explain their illustrations and justify their futuristic thinking.
In addition, the children explored colour scales in Art, discovering what happens when white is gradually added to a colour. Using stencils, they created textured planets with different shades and tones, before experimenting with sponges to see how they could create new and exciting effects.
Next, in DT, the children became space engineers, carefully labelling the different parts and features of a moon buggy. Year 5 also explored planetary sizes and distances using salt dough in Science. The children were completely blown away by the enormous difference between tiny Mercury and giant Jupiter.
Then, Year 5 linked our space topic to movement. In PE (Gymnastics), straight jumps blasted off like rockets, pike jumps zoomed through the air like meteorites, and star jumps… well, they sparkled like stars! Working in groups of three or four, the children choreographed their own space-themed sequences, showing great teamwork and creativity.
In PSHE, Year 5 discussed the importance of rules, rewards and achievements. Through playing different games, the children learnt how following rules makes activities fair and fun, while also demonstrating excellent sportsmanship.
Finally, in English, the children showcased fantastic research skills while gathering facts about Neil Armstrong. From his early life to the historic Apollo 11 mission, they are now beginning to piece together biographies.
