English – Writing in Role from Letters from the Lighthouse
In English this week, we have continued to fully immerse ourselves in Letters from the Lighthouse. We wrote a diary entry in role, focusing on the characters’ emotions during the train journey to evacuation. We thought carefully about how the characters might have been feeling as they left their homes and families behind.
We then worked on describing their arrival at Budmouth Point in Devon, using powerful noun phrases, verbs, and repetition to show how the characters felt when they reached the coast. This helped us make our writing more descriptive and emotional.
History – The Battle of Britain and Anne Frank
In history, we explored the Battle of Britain, a key event in World War II. We learned how the German Luftwaffe tried to gain control of the skies so Germany could invade Britain, and how the British RAF defended the country through intense aerial dogfights. We discussed why this battle was a turning point and how Britain’s success helped prevent an invasion.
We then wrote witness accounts in role as different people who might have seen the dogfights, such as RAF pilots, civilians on the ground, or air raid wardens. This helped us imagine what it might have been like to live through such dramatic and frightening events.
In a second history lesson, we learned about the life of Anne Frank and her experiences during World War II. We reflected on what it must have been like to live in hiding and how her diary has helped people understand life during the war. Some children responded by writing poems to reflect on Anne Frank’s life and the emotions she may have felt, which were thoughtful and powerful.

Science – Microorganisms
In science, we have been learning about microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and mould. We discovered that microorganisms are tiny living things that can only be seen with a microscope. Some microorganisms can be harmful and cause illness, while others are helpful and are used in things like food production and medicine.
It was interesting to learn how something so small can have such a big impact on our lives.
Maths – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages
In maths, we have been finding fractions of amounts and recapping area and perimeter. We also revisited fractions, decimals and percentages and practised converting between them to understand how they are connected.
The recap helped refresh our knowledge and made us more confident when applying these skills to different problems.
PE – Dance Inspired by Guernica
In PE, we created dances inspired by Guernica, which links to the Spanish Civil War. We used our bodies and facial expressions to show the emotions and experiences of people affected by the war, such as fear, confusion and sadness.
The dances were powerful and expressive, and it was interesting to use movement rather than words to tell a story and show how people might have felt during such a difficult time.
