Coten End Primary School

Week Beginning 02.02.26

This week, Year 5 have been busy learning, creating, and celebrating their achievements across the curriculum.

In English, the children became poets and did a fantastic job creating both blackout poetry and space-themed shape poems. They showed creativity, imagination, and careful word choices in all of their work.

In PE, we continued our gymnastics unit, focusing on paired balance work. The children worked safely and supportively with their partners, demonstrating strength, control, and excellent cooperation.

In Music, the children impressed us with their performance skills as they accompanied the song ‘Popular’ from Wicked, keeping the rhythm and working together confidently.

On Friday 6th February, we celebrated NSPCC Number Day.

To highlight that maths is everywhere and part of everything we do, the children explored maths through English lessons too. They were inspired by Ten-Word Tiny Tales by Joseph Coelho and friends and practised writing their own 10-word stories. After that, we shared the beautiful wordless book Journey by Aaron Becker. Working in groups of four, the children wrote 10-word tiny tales to accompany the illustrations and created their very own mini-books.

In Maths, the children took part in Buddy’s Maths Challenge, working together as a class to solve clues and find the 10 missing parts of the key. Their teamwork paid off, and they won the fantastic prize of 10 stars in the jar — well done, Year 5!

During Art, the children explored shape and completed their final retrofuturism collage pieces. Using a mix of soft chalk pastels, oil pastels, acrylic paint, and collage images, they carefully combined different media to create unique and striking artworks. The final pieces were imaginative, thoughtful, and full of personality.
