SPRING 1 - Week 5 (wb: 2.2.26)

Year 1 had an exciting, number-filled day as they celebrated NSPCC Number Day! This year’s theme was Moving up the Mathematical Mindset Mountain, which encouraged the children to develop a growth mindset and approach maths with confidence and curiosity. The classroom was buzzing all day with enthusiasm as the children took part in a wide range of maths-based activities.

To begin the celebrations, the children were invited to “dress up in digits”, and they certainly did not disappoint! We spotted sporty kits with numbers on the back, tops covered in spots to count, and even some wonderfully creative, homemade maths-themed outfits. It was fantastic to see so much effort and excitement right from the start of the day.

Our adult-led focus activity explored addition stories, a fun and engaging way to help children visualise number sentences and understand how numbers work together. The children showed great focus and enjoyment as they brought maths to life through storytelling.

Throughout the day, the children also explored a variety of number-themed activities in their continuous provision. As you can see in the gallery below, they played number games, solved problems using play-doh and even created digits using objects found around the classroom. They also had to solve 'Buddy's Challenge' which involved them solving clues to find parts of a key that opened a magic door!

We hope this special day inspired the children and will encourage them to be brave, confident, and positive when approaching maths in the future.
