Coten End Primary School
Week beginning 23.02.26
What a busy week we’ve had in Year 6!
English – Visualising Budmouth Point
In English, we returned to Letters from the Lighthouse and picked up where we left off, visualising what Budmouth Point might look like. Using Emma Carroll’s description, we carefully imagined the setting and drew what we thought it would look like. We thought about the cliffs, the sea, the lighthouse and the atmosphere described in the text.
After that, we wrote our own detailed descriptions, clearly using our senses to bring the setting to life. We focused on the writing skills we have been practising, including strong noun phrases, powerful verbs and varied sentence structures.
We also wrote poems inspired by Emma Carroll’s style. We imitated her tone and language choices to create atmospheric and emotional pieces of writing. It was a creative and thoughtful lesson, and we are really proud of the imagery we created.
DT – Exploring and Designing Lighthouses
In DT this week, we began exploring lighthouses as part of our learning linked to Letters from the Lighthouse. We carried out research, thinking carefully about how lighthouses are built, why they are shaped the way they are, and how they are designed to withstand strong winds and crashing waves.
We looked at different types of lighthouses from around the world and sketched detailed cross-sections, showing the inside structure as well as the outside design. This helped us understand how the light works, where the staircase might be, and how the building stays stable.
We are now working towards designing and building our own lighthouses, so this research has helped us plan carefully and think like real engineers. We’re excited to start constructing them soon!
Safer Internet Day – Digital Skills
As part of Safer Internet Day, we were lucky to welcome a brilliant visitor who led a session all about Digital Skills. The workshop helped us think carefully about how we use the internet and social media, and how to stay safe online.
We discussed some of the pressures people can feel when using social media, such as trying to fit in, getting likes, or responding to messages quickly. We also talked about the importance of being kind and respectful online, understanding that what one person thinks is playful joking could feel like bullying to someone else.
We learned how to get help if we ever experience online bullying and when it is important to tell a trusted adult. Another key focus was thinking critically about what we see online- questioning whether something is true and checking if a source is trustworthy.
Finally, we explored ways to keep ourselves safe when using popular apps and games, including protecting personal information and setting boundaries. It was an important and valuable session that helped us become more responsible digital citizens.
SPaG Revision – Working Hard for Practice SATs
This week, we have worked VERY hard revising for our Practice SATs week. In SPaG, we carefully looked at different areas of grammar, punctuation and spelling and identified the parts we found more challenging.
Once we knew what we were struggling with, we created posters to help us remember the trickier vocabulary and key rules. This helped us revise in a creative way and made the important information easier to recall.
We’ve shown great focus and determination, and we are really proud of the effort everyone has put into their revision.
