This week in Year 2 has been full of curiosity, creativity and thoughtful discussions across all of our learning.
In History, the children continued exploring life during the Victorian era and comparing it with life today. We looked carefully at a range of images showing Victorian homes, schools and daily life. The children enjoyed spotting details and discussing what looked similar and what looked different compared to their own experiences today. They noticed differences such as the layout of classrooms, the clothes children wore, and the types of furniture and household items people used. At the same time, they recognised that some things are still the same, such as children going to school, families spending time together and people helping each other in their communities.
In Science, we checked on the cress seeds we planted last week and were amazed at how much they had grown in just one week! The children were very excited to observe the changes and discuss why the plants were growing so well. To show what they have learnt, the children created information posters and booklets explaining what plants need in order to grow successfully. We also recapped MRS GREN and the seven life processes that all living things carry out, helping the children understand how plants and animals are both living things.
In Art, we explored using line and colour through both pencil and paint. The children were introduced to gouache paint and enjoyed experimenting with colour mixing. We also modelled careful brush control and discussed making thoughtful colour choices inspired by nature. The children produced some beautiful and expressive artwork.
In English, we continued using traditional tales as inspiration, focusing this week on The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children learnt about the subordinating conjunction “when” and used it to write instruction texts advising goats how to successfully cross the bridge without being eaten by the troll!
In Maths, we explored equal and unequal parts of shapes, building an important understanding as we begin learning about fractions.
Another busy week!
