Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 13.04.26
What an unforgettable start to the summer term it has been for Year 5!
We began the week full of excitement for our very first swimming session. However, the day quickly turned into quite an unexpected adventure. While at the leisure centre, the children experienced a real-life fire drill and had to be safely evacuated from the building. Wrapped in foil blankets to keep warm, we watched as two fire engines arrived, along with firefighters who quickly dealt with the minor incident using their hoses.
During this time, Mrs Pope, Mr Grana, Mrs George and Mrs Pittaway came to collect us and bring us safely back to school while we waited for the all-clear for our belongings. We are incredibly proud of how the children handled the situation. They showed remarkable maturity, patience and resilience. The children remained calm, supporting one another and representing the school brilliantly throughout.
Back in the classroom, it has been a busy and creative start to the term across all subjects!
In Art, our jungle animal theme is well underway. The children have challenged themselves with detailed and vibrant parrot illustrations, showing great focus and creativity.
In DT, linked to sustainability, Year 5 took part in a refashion and upcycle competition. Using discarded materials, the children created beautiful scrap fabric wreaths. They carefully cut fabric into strips and worked collaboratively in small groups to design colourful, spring-inspired creations. The teamwork and calm approach they demonstrated was fantastic to see.
In Maths, we have started a new unit on shape. The children have been learning about different types of turns and classifying angles, building confidence in this important area of geometry.
In English, we have been developing our understanding of the difference between speech bubbles and thought bubbles. The focus has been on inference, thinking deeply about what characters might be feeling and thinking beyond what is written.
In Science, we explored animal classification, learning about the key characteristics of mammals, reptiles, fish, birds and amphibians. The children then impressed us with their independent research, showing curiosity and enthusiasm for the natural world.
All in all, it has been a truly eventful and positive start to the term. We are so proud of Year 5 and are looking forward to everything the rest of the summer term has in store!
