Year 2 have had a brilliant and energetic start to the new half-term, diving straight into our Fantastic Mr Fox unit with huge enthusiasm. The children have loved exploring the story, discussing the characters and using the text as inspiration for learning across the curriculum.
In English, we have been focusing on the features of a letter. Building on the grammatical skills they have developed throughout the year—such as expanded noun phrases and coordinating conjunctions—the children wrote in role as the farmers from the story. Their task was to create a persuasive letter asking for help to finally get rid of the pesky fox who had been causing them so much trouble. The children produced wonderfully dramatic and expressive pieces of writing.
In Maths, we have continued our work on fractions, exploring equivalent fractions as well as unit and non‑unit fractions. The children have shown growing confidence in identifying, comparing and representing fractions in different ways.
Our Science lessons have been especially exciting. We have been recapping life cycles, particularly those of chicks and ducks, which has linked perfectly to the arrival of our very own duck and chick eggs. Some have already hatched, and it has been absolutely mesmerising to watch. The children have been completely captivated—there’s no denying we are all a little bit in love. We can’t wait to enjoy their company for another week.
In Geography, we revisited physical and human features and explored the Charred Cross at Coventry Cathedral, discussing its emotional impact and creating detailed drawings of this powerful symbol.
In DT, we have been learning about wheels and how vehicles move, before designing and creating our own moving vehicles. The children were incredibly proud of their finished models.
It has been a busy, creative and inspiring start to the half-term, and we are excited about everything still to come.
