Coten End Primary School

Week Beginning 08.06.26

This week in English, Year 5 practised writing their own kennings (imaginative, two‑word poetic phrases that describe something in a fresh and exciting way). Year 5 experimented with building vivid images and choosing powerful nouns and verbs.

In Maths, we revisited place value and strengthened our understanding using interactive place value charts. These hands‑on tools helped everyone visualise how digits shift in value depending on their position. The children worked confidently with large numbers and enjoyed the challenge of representing them in different ways.

In Geography, we explored the major divisions of the Earth, including hemispheres, continents and key lines such as the Equator. The children enjoyed locating these on maps and discussing how they help us understand our world.

Our History lessons took us back in time to Anglo‑Saxon Britain. We examined how villages were structured, what houses looked like and how people lived day to day. The children were fascinated by the simplicity of Anglo‑Saxon homes and how different life was compared to today.

In Computing, we began researching our chosen World Cup countries. The children started gathering facts, exploring maps and learning how to find reliable information online. This research will feed into exciting projects over the coming weeks.

Finally, Year 5 finished off their artwork as well as their front covers for their topic books. The classroom has been full of colour, imagination and careful detail. It’s been wonderful to see each child’s personality shine through their designs.
