Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 12/05/25
This week in Year 5, we've been diving into the past and sprinting into the future with an exciting mix of subjects and activities!
In History, we compared Roman Britain to Anglo-Saxon Britain. The class worked hard to understand the differences between the two periods, from how people lived to how laws were enforced. To bring our learning to life, Year 5 performed brilliant re-enactments of court cases from both eras. It was fantastic to see everyone getting into character – there were some fierce judges, passionate lawyers, and even some funny defendants!
Building on their recent drama work, in PSHE Year 5 explored the question: How does the internet, social media, and the media impact our lives? They worked in groups to write their own scripts and the children did a brilliant job collaborating in their teams. Each group developed creative scenes and they bravely performed their pieces in front of their peers, showing both confidence and sensitivity to the topic.
In Science, Year 5 became material detectives. Jamie and Remy share their learning experience. “We explored a variety of materials and learnt about their different properties. We looked at materials such as rock, paper, wood and cardboard”.
Jamie and Remy continue to share their learning experience on the subject of Maths. “We have been learning all about angles and shapes. We explored angles around a point, angles on a straight line, and how to calculate missing angles”.
In English, Year 5 continued working on character and setting descriptions. The children have been using expanded noun phrases, similes, and metaphors to bring their characters to life on the page, particularly focusing on Valkyries. Some even challenged themselves by using personification, giving their characters’ emotions and actions extra depth.
Finally, over in PE, the athletics season is in full swing. All of Year 5 gathered to practise and tried a range of events, including long-distance running, long jump, sprints, and even javelin. There was a lot of energy and enthusiasm on the field, with great sportsmanship and determination on display.
