Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 19.05.25
As we reach the end of our short but action-packed Summer 1 term, Year 5 have certainly made the most of every learning opportunity.
In English, Year 5 have concluded their character and setting descriptions—and not just in narrative writing. The children were surprised to find how important these descriptions are in script writing too. They explored how using vivid language can help an audience picture a scene or imagine a character's personality. This led to some fantastic mini-performances at the end of the week, with groups using their scripts to bring scenes to life. Meanwhile, others worked on creating detailed non-chronological reports about the Anglo-Saxons, showing off their research and writing skills.
In History, we have been looking at the Heptarchy—the seven kingdoms that made up early England. Year 5 learnt how Anglo-Saxon kings used heraldry, including flags and shields, to display their power and status. Using a special fact sheet, pupils were challenged to design a flag and shield to represent their own Anglo-Saxon kingdom. They thought carefully about colour meanings, symbols, and what would make their kingdom stand out as powerful and respected.
In Geography, Year 5 have been exploring how to find precise locations on a map using latitude and longitude. The children learnt how these imaginary lines help us pinpoint any place on Earth. Year 5 also investigated time zones, discovering why different parts of the world experience day and night at different times. This led to some brilliant discussions about travel, global events, and how the world is connected.
In PE, we've continued to prepare for Sports Day. Year 5 have been practising a range of skills: sprinting, team relay events and even sac race. They have displayed great focus, determination and teamwork.
We're proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm Year 5 have shown this half-term.
