A Wonderful Ancient Greek Day and So Much More!
What a truly fantastic week it’s been in Year 4! The highlight has to be our Ancient Greek Theme Day, which brought our history learning to life in the most incredible way. The children arrived in a dazzling array of costumes — from fierce Spartan warriors and noble Athenian citizens to shimmering Greek goddesses and mythical creatures! We were so impressed by the creativity, effort and responsibility shown by everyone. The classrooms were filled with excitement and curiosity as we stepped back in time to explore what life was like in Ancient Greece.
During the day, the children painted their clay pots, carefully adding intricate geometric patterns and traditional designs. The concentration and determination they showed were wonderful — each pot is unique and beautifully detailed. In the afternoon, we moved from art to cookery, making spinach and feta parcels inspired by the Greek dish spanakopita. The children worked brilliantly in teams, showing true collaboration and creativity as they chose their own flavourings and folded their pastries with care. It smelled delicious in every classroom!
Our artistic skills didn’t stop there — we also created stunning mixed-media collages inspired by Greek gods and goddesses. Using paint, fabric, and metallic paper, the children thought carefully about symbolism and composition, showing great curiosity and imagination.
Elsewhere in the week, we continued exploring the digestive system in science, building on our understanding of how food travels through the body. The children asked thoughtful questions and worked safely and respectfully throughout our practical activities.
In music, our singing sessions reached an exciting stage as we recorded our very own verse for the song written by the children about life at Coten End. Their enthusiasm, courage and teamwork were fantastic — we can’t wait to share the finished piece soon!
Throughout the week, we’ve seen every one of our school values in action: curiosity in our learning, collaboration in cooking and music, determination in art, responsibility in our conduct and courage in performing and sharing ideas. The children have remembered to Be Safe and Be Respectful, making it a truly joyful and memorable week of learning.
