Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 3rd November
We have been enjoying our new topic already this week, which is based around Phillip Pullman's novel 'The Firework Maker's Daughter'. For our topic book covers this half term, we have used chalk pastels to create our own images of firework displays inspired by the text. We started the week by looking at the front cover of the book and reading the blurb to make predictions about what we thought might happen in the story. Since then, we have read chapter 1 and been introduced to the main characters of Lalchand, his daughter Lila and Hamlet the elephant! We can't wait to read more and find out what happens next.
In Maths this week, we have begun learning the formal written method for addition and have been practising by adding 2 and 3-digit numbers together. We have even been learning to exchange tens too.
Our Science topic this half term is all about light and dark. We started this week by gathering all the knowledge we already have about light and then we discussed different light sources. We talked about natural and man-made light sources and drew some images of different light sources in our Science books. We then did an experiment with dark boxes to see if we could identify various objects without any light.
One of our Learning Theme topics this half term is Art and the topic centres around drawing elephants. We started this week by doing a continuous line drawing of an elephant. We had to put our pencil on the page in our sketch books and weren't allowed to take it off again until we had finished drawing the whole elephant!
In PE this half term, we will be doing archery and we learnt this week the correct stance and how to load the arrow onto the bow.
