Another busy and exciting week in Year 2!
In Maths, we spent time recapping how to subtract and add two-digit numbers. We used lots of helpful pictorial methods to show our thinking, such as tens and ones drawings and number lines. We also practised comparing numbers using the symbols greater than, less than, and equal to, becoming much more confident at deciding which numbers are bigger or smaller.
In English, we continued learning about how to write in the present tense. We used two wonderful Julia Donaldson texts—The Gruffalo and Stick Man—to help us spot present-tense verbs and use them in our own sentences. The children really enjoyed discussing the characters and creating their own present tense sentences. e.g. She is running towards the rapid river.
Our Science lessons were very hands-on this week. Using iPads, we searched for the different materials that everyday objects can be made from. For example, we discovered that a spoon might be made of porcelain, wood, cardboard, metal, or plastic. We also talked about why some materials are more useful than others depending on their properties, such as being strong, flexible, waterproof, or light or how some may be fit for one purpose over another.
In History, following our COOL curriculum, we continued learning about the Great Fire of London, focusing on how and why the fire spread so quickly. We have also been looking at the timeline that the events took place and have enjoyed choosing how to record our own learning.
To finish the week, we had a fantastic time at the Christmas Fair! We got to wear our Christmas jumpers and enjoyed all the stalls, including Splat the Sprout, Racing Reindeers, and Knock the Elf on the Shelf. We are definitely in the Christmas spirit now!
