What a brilliant and busy week we’ve had in Year 2! In English, we have been exploring different suffixes used to show the past tense. The children noticed that some past-tense verb endings sound different from how they are written, and they practised using a range of past-tense verbs with different suffixes in their own sentences. This helped them understand how changing a verb to the past tense can change the meaning of a whole sentence.
In Maths, we have begun our new unit on shapes. We started by recapping the properties of both 2D and 3D shapes, discussing sides, vertices and faces. We then moved on to identifying lines of symmetry and used mirrors to check whether shapes had symmetrical halves. The children loved testing different shapes and were excited to see how the reflected images helped them decide if a shape was symmetrical.
Our Science lesson involved a hands-on investigation into insulation. We wrapped ice cubes in different materials—bubble wrap, foil, paper and fabric—and observed which material kept the ice cold for longest. The children worked carefully to make sure it was a fair test, showing fantastic scientific thinking.
In Computing, we tested the algorithms we created last week using the Bluebots. The class loved programming the robots and watching them follow their instructions with accuracy (and sometimes surprising results!).
Finally, in History, we continued learning about the Great Fire of London. The children wrote diary entries in the style of Samuel Pepys and then created model houses inspired by those that stood on Pudding Lane. Their creativity really brought the topic to life.
We've also been busy practising for our Christmas concert next week – we cannot wait to show our families all of our hard work.
Well done, Year 2, for another wonderful week of learning!
