SCIENCE – Peppered Moths

In Science, we are learning about different types of moths and creating their offspring, but before that we focused on peppered moths and how they adapted. We also read a story about them. They adapted by being spotted at first, but when the Industrial Revolution came, many of them turned black. Later on, when the environment became cleaner again, they turned spotted once more.

We also created posters, poems and fact files about peppered moths.

The moth I made is called the Rosy Tiger moth. It is the offspring of a Rosy Maple moth and a Garden Tiger moth. We are going to write a non-chronological report, and we are going to use AI to create a picture of our moths. There are so many different types of moths!

 Geography- Researching Conservation Projects

In Geography this week, we have been researching the Galapagos Conservation Trust and learning about what they do to help protect the animals living on the islands.

We’ve also looked at the different projects the Galapagos Conservation Trust runs. In partners, we chose two projects and created either a poem or a poster about it. For example, I chose the whale shark because they are endangered due to industrial fishing and poaching. Did you know? The Galapagos Conservation Trust tags sea creatures to track where they go and to make sure they stay safe.

Our class also read some of the books written with the help of the Galapagos Conservation Trust, including stories about animals they have saved, like Tessa the Tortoise.

RE – Debating

This half term in RE, we have been debating! Our unit explores the big question: “What does it mean to live well?” We asked each other whether we believe people are born evil, whether it’s nature or nurture, and if we should always forgive. “Debating was very fun as we got to express our opinions,” Josh said.

I personally think this topic in RE was great because it allowed us to share our own opinions and hear what other people thought too.

PE- Football

So in PE we have been doing football (5v5 for clarification). We usually start with a warm-up that includes things like squats, lunges, star jumps and about 2–3 laps around the field.

We tend to have four teams. Two of the teams are not super confident but can still play well. The third team is quite confident and plays skilfully, and the fourth team is very confident — some of them even play for teams outside of school. Our class is very competitive, so you can imagine what the scores are like!

Football is one of the most famous sports on Earth, with millions of people enjoying it. In PE we have started football training to help us get even better than we already are. Even though some people in our class aren’t the biggest fans of football or sport, they still join in and have fun. Our class loves sport in general because we are very competitive and we love winning.

When we play football, we start with stretches, we especially love doing squats! Before the actual match, we practise our shots by taking penalties and taking turns in goal, sometimes with defenders too. Then we move on to the match, which is definitely our favourite part.

Maths- more fractions!

This week in maths, we have been learning how to add and subtract mixed numbers. There are quite a few steps to remember, but we have kept persevering so we can become more confident. We have also worked collaboratively to practise converting mixed numbers to improper fractions and subtracting decimal numbers.

English
This week, we edited our diary entries, focusing on spelling, accurate punctuation and using different types of sentences. We have also been practising relative clauses and similes, ready to write our non-chronological reports about a moth of our own creation. We planned each section carefully.

Here are some relative clauses and similes that I created:

  • The Garden Maple Moth, which is a mix of a Garden Tiger Moth and a Rosy Maple Moth, lives in woodland areas.

  • The Garden Tiger Moth is as vivid as a rainbow.

  • The Galápagos Islands are as hot as a volcano.

  • The Garden Maple Moth is as fast as a leopard.

  • The Garden Maple Moth is as thin as a sheet of glass
