Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 12.01.26
This week, in our topic work, we explored the achievements of space explorers Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. We learnt about their journey to the Moon and why it was such an important moment in history. We have also started to look at the life of Katherine Johnson, a brilliant mathematician whose work helped astronauts travel safely into space. We are looking forward to learning more about her and why her contributions were so important.
Next, we have been completing and consolidating our learning on perimeter and area in Maths. We practised finding the perimeter by adding all the sides of shapes and worked out the area by counting squares and using multiplication. Year 5 showed great perseverance and are becoming much more confident with these skills.
In RE, we began a new topic on Worldviews. We discussed what a personal worldview is and how people’s beliefs, values and experiences can shape the way they see the world. We also explored what it means for worldviews to be embodied and inhabited, which led to some thoughtful and respectful discussions.
For Design and Technology, Year 5 researched the moon buggy and learnt about its purpose. We found out why it was designed, how it worked on the Moon and how it helped astronauts explore the lunar surface more easily.
Finally, in Art, Year 5 started their new retro-futurism space art. We looked at different space-themed images and became art critics, explaining what we liked and disliked and why. We used artistic vocabulary to share our opinions and listened carefully to each other’s ideas.
