English – Debating Evacuation in Letters from the Lighthouse

In English this week, we took part in a debate about whether Olive and Cliff should be evacuated out of London in Letters from the Lighthouse. Some of us argued for the motion (the proposition), while others argued against it (the opposition). We had to think carefully about the dangers of staying in London during the war as well as the worries and risks of being evacuated.

After the debate, we wrote balanced arguments, making sure we included both sides of the discussion before giving a conclusion. It was fascinating to hear different opinions and to see how one question can have more than one reasonable answer.

History – The Battle of Dunkirk

In history, we learned about the key parts of the Battle of Dunkirk. To show our understanding, we created comic strips that showed what happened during the evacuation and why it was such an important moment in World War II.

We then got into role as different people involved in the battle, such as an Army Officer, a Soldier, or a Civilian Canoeist. We wrote short speeches explaining how it might have felt to be there at the time. This helped us understand the bravery, fear and determination people experienced during Dunkirk.

Maths – Fractions and Roman Numerals

In maths this week, we have been multiplying fractions by integers (whole numbers) and multiplying fractions by fractions. We practised the steps carefully and then applied our learning to solve different problems.

We also explored Roman numerals and completed some problem-solving activities to challenge our thinking. It was tricky at times, but practising helped us become more confident.

PE – Athletics

In PE, we have been focusing on athletics. We practised sprinting, triple jump, and relay races, working together in teams. We focused on technique, speed and teamwork, especially during the relays.

It was energetic and fun, and everyone tried their best to improve and support their teammates.
