Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 02.03.26
Year 5 had a fantastic time celebrating Book Week, with a special focus on the power of oracy and storytelling.
Year 5 explored two traditional Brazilian tales: Boitatá the Fire Snake and Curupira, the Guardian of the Forest. The children worked together to perform and retell the stories, using expressive voices, actions and teamwork to engage their audience. They also created freeze frames to capture important moments in the tales and incorporated acting to make the stories even more exciting. It was wonderful to see the children using their speaking and listening skills so effectively while building their confidence in performance.
Year 5 also learnt about the important role of illustrators in bringing stories to life. The class discussed different illustration styles found in books and explored how pictures can help readers understand and imagine a story. Inspired by this, the children designed their own illustrations, showing fantastic creativity and individuality.
A particularly special part of the week was the opportunity for Year 5 to work with younger pupils. On Friday morning, the children listened carefully to Year 1 readers and also shared stories with them, offering encouragement and support. In the afternoon, they spent time reading with Reception, where they showed great patience and kindness. Year 5 were excellent role models, demonstrating responsibility and enthusiasm while helping younger children enjoy reading.
