Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 16.03.26
This week in Year 5 has been full of exciting learning across all subjects.
In English, we explored how to structure a balanced argument. The children debated the question: Are Boitatá and Curupira threats or heroes? The children worked brilliantly together, sharing thoughtful ideas and building strong arguments for both sides. It was fantastic to see such teamwork and enthusiasm during discussions.
In Geography, we focused on land use and climate. Year 5 compared which crops grow in the UK and Brazil and discussed how climate affects farming. The children then took part in role-play activities, acting out different scenarios and considering how changes in climate might impact crops.
In Art, Year 5 have begun experimenting with collage. The children are exploring layering techniques using a range of jungle-inspired colours, carefully selecting and arranging pieces to create vibrant compositions.
Finally, in Design and Technology, we learnt about the differences between spices and herbs. To bring our learning to life, the children enjoyed a tasting session where everyone tried a variety of spices and herbs from Brazil, rating them from their most to least favourite. There were some very interesting reactions! To make the experience even more special, we were lucky to welcome a visitor, one of our pupils’ fathers, who spoke about his experiences growing up in Brazil before recently moving to England. The children thoroughly enjoyed asking questions and learning first-hand about Brazilian culture.
