Coten End Primary School
Week Beginning 04.11.24
After October half term, Year 5 are off to a fantastic start! It has been wonderful to see Year 5 settle back into school full of energy and ready to learn.
Our new topic, Magical Muggles, has truly captivated the children’s imaginations. In English, we have started reading our new class text, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The children have been absorbed in the magical world and have been excited to explore each character in depth. This week, we’re focusing on character descriptions, and it’s inspiring to see the creativity and detail that the children are bringing to their work.
In Maths, we’ve been busy wrapping up our addition and subtraction unit. The children have shown great focus and have built up a strong understanding of these foundational skills. Next week, we will start our unit on multiplication and division.
Next, in Science we have been exploring the properties and changes of materials. This week, the children enjoyed identifying solids, liquids, and gases, and they even had the chance to make oobleck – a fascinating non-Newtonian fluid that doesn’t behave like typical solids or liquids! It was a hands-on experiment, and the children were thrilled to experience this unusual material first-hand.
Geography is another exciting new subject area this term, where we’ll be expanding our knowledge of the UK. The children are learning to identify key cities and local counties. We’re even tying this into our Magical Muggles topic by looking at real-life locations used for filming the Harry Potter films.
Finally, in PE, the children are continuing to develop their ball skills, focusing on control, teamwork, and accuracy. In two weeks, they’ll be starting a new unit on Dance, which will give them the chance to explore movement and rhythm in a creative way.
