A Busy and Exciting Week for Year 5!
Even though it’s the last week of term, Year 5 have had an incredibly busy and exciting week full of learning, creativity, and fun! Let's have a look at some of the highlights, with contributions from Jess W and Risha in 5MC.
Monday: Easter Experience at St Nicholas Church
Year 5 kicked off the week with a trip to St Nicholas Church for an Easter Experience. The class had the chance to take part in five different activities that helped them learn more about the Easter story and its significance for Christians.
Tuesday: A Visit from Author Onjali Q. Rauf
On Tuesday, Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to meet and be inspired by Onjali Q. Rauf, the author of The Boy in the Back of the Classroom. Onjali captivated the class with readings from her new book, The Letter with the Golden Stamp, even doing so in a Welsh accent! She also took the time to discuss important topics like young carers, refugees, and feminism. Year 5 were completely engaged and asked Onjali some thoughtful and insightful questions.
Cooking Up a Storm
Year 5 turned into chefs this week! They practised their knife skills, using the bridge and claw grips to chop vegetables for a traditional Brazilian dish: feijoada.
“On Tuesday afternoon, we prepared the vegetables. This included butternut squash, sweet potato, red pepper, onions, courgette, garlic as well as oranges.”
In groups of eight, Year 5 worked together to make this hearty black bean stew, each adding their own choice of ingredients, spices, and herbs to create the perfect flavour.
“On Wednesday we started making the feijoada. We cut some greens and herbs. We boiled the sweet potato for 10 minutes and rice for 12-15 minutes. We added beans to our red pepper, onion, garlic and butternut squash mix and stirred gently for a long time”.
After all their hard work, in the afternoon, Year 5 sat down to enjoy their delicious creation during ‘Come Dine with Year 5.’ It was a wonderful opportunity to try their dish, as well as their peers' dishes, and share the results of their cooking.
“On Wednesday afternoon we also tried some authentic Brazilian cheese bread. It was tasty!”
Creative Arts with Beatriz Milhazes
In art, Year 5 got creative with the work of Brazilian artist, Beatriz Milhazes. The artwork was full of energy, and the class had a great time experimenting with shapes, colours, and textures to produce their own masterpieces.
“First we painted the background with three different colours of our choice. We painted the base using squares, lines and rectangles. Over the background, we added some circles and squiggly lines using fancy scissors. Finally, we included stencils, stamps and dots to create our cool, vibrant mixed-media designs”.
Year 5’s Wonderful Afternoon with Their Reception Buddies
Year 5 had a fantastic time visiting their Reception buddies for a special Easter-themed get-together. The children were full of excitement as they paired up and headed out into the garden for an Easter riddle hunt. Working collaboratively, Year 5 helped their buddies read each clue carefully and solve the riddles together. It was brilliant to see the teamwork, everyone eagerly searched around the garden to find the next clue. After all the excitement of the Easter riddle hunt, it was lovely to wind down with some calm colouring in the classroom. Year 5 pupils and their Reception buddies worked together to create beautiful Easter-themed pictures, helping each other choose colours.
It has been an exciting and action-packed week, and Year 5 have made the most of every moment. Year 5 have had a brilliant Spring 2, and as term comes to a close, we wish you all a happy and restful Easter break!
