Computing

Curriculum Lead: Charley Slater

Intent

At Coten End, Computing is a subject we are passionate about. We are acutely aware that our children will soon be entering a world in which technology will be at the centre. We aim to ensure our pupils are competent in using a wide range of technology and software as well as ensuring they have a secure understanding of the issues surrounding Online Safety. We hope our children leave Coten End with skills of digital literacy at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active, safe participants in a digital world.

Implementation

Children are introduced to a wide range of technology from the moment they start their journey at Coten End. Across the key stages, our children have access to resources such as Chromebooks, iPads, BeeBots, BlueBots, Loti-Bots, Code-a-pillars and software including Purple Mash, Scratch and Google Applications. All our classrooms have modern Clevertouch interactive screens which are used by both staff and pupils to create a stimulating learning environment. This ensures our children gain knowledge and understanding in all areas of the Computing Curriculum. From an early age, pupils are introduced to algorithms and coding, text and data handling and graphics and animation. As children progress through the school, these skills are enhanced further and children expand their knowledge becoming prepared for life after Primary School.

We understand how Computing has intrinsic links with other areas of the curriculum. We use our technology in areas such as Design and Technology, Mathematics, Science and English, which enables pupils to make connections and apply their understanding across all areas of learning.

Our Online Safety curriculum is delivered throughout our curriculum in order to embed the important messages it provides. Through the teaching of Computing, PSHE and reactive lessons, we hope our pupils gain a deep understanding of the dangers they may face, how they can stay safe online and who they can seek for support.

Impact

Pupils leave Coten End with an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science. They become competent in using core software programmes such as word processing and data representation, allowing them to continue their education confidently. Their logic and problem-solving skills are enhanced, having had repeated practical experience of writing computer programs and they are prepared for the ever-changing word of technology that they will inevitably face. Above all, we hope our pupils leave Coten End responsible, experienced, self-assured and safe users of information and communication technology.
