Coten End Primary School

Our Curriculum

Intent

“Learning for everyone, learning from everyone.”

Our broad, rich curriculum at Coten End promotes and sustains a thirst for knowledge and understanding and a love of learning. It is coherently planned and sequenced in order to cumulatively build knowledge and skills throughout the school, providing opportunities for academic, artistic, technical and sporting excellence. Our curriculum has been carefully structured to promote remembering and long-term learning, making links between subjects and themes and reinforcing key concepts and vocabulary. It has a very positive impact on all pupils’ behaviour and safety, developing their resilience, confidence and independence and helping them to know how to keep physically and mentally healthy. Teachers use a range of assessment strategies to identify gaps and tailor the curriculum to ensure that every child is engaged, inspired and challenged. We aim for children to leave our school equipped to be responsible, respectful, tolerant, active citizens who contribute positively to society and have a clear understanding of fundamental British values. The curriculum we have constructed at Coten End is ambitious and has been designed to empower all learners with the knowledge and cultural capital they are entitled to and need in order to succeed in life.

The curriculum comprises:

  • The formal curriculum defined by the statutory orders of the National Curriculum and the EYFS Curriculum.
  • An inclusive curriculum that is differentiated for those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND). We have high expectations for all pupils and are committed to ensuring our curriculum complies with the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014. We emphasise the importance of providing an inclusive learning environment for all pupils including those with SEND. Additional information on this can be found in our SEND Provision page and Equality Policy and Objectives
  • The Religious Education Curriculum in accordance with the Warwickshire agreed syllabus (SACRE).
  • The additional curricular provision of PSHE, taught weekly in all year groups, including:

        - Statutory Relationships, Health and Sex Education (taught through the 'Jigsaw' scheme)

        - Protective Behaviours (taught through use of ‘The Taking Care Project’)

  • Swimming lessons for all KS2 classes.
  • A Modern Foreign Language (predominantly French, though also covering Spanish and German) taught weekly in all Key Stage 2 classes by a specialist teacher.
  • A wide range of extra-curricular activities, which are undertaken by school staff or outside providers, outside of curriculum hours.
